After an hour had passed, and Inter Miami was down 2-0, reigning World Cup winner Lionel Messi linked twice with Leonardo Campana to force overtime. In the 93rd minute, Josef Martnez, the 2019 Open Cup champion, scored to put the Herons ahead 3-2.

Yuya Kubo of FC Cincinnati eventually scored an equalizer in the 114th minute to force a penalty shot tiebreaker. Nick Hagglund, a resident of Cincinnati, attempted to score in the fifth round of the shootout, but Miami goalie Drake Callender stopped him.
